Laura Chinchilla
Laura Chinchilla Georgetown University graduate is elected as the first female president of Costa Rica. Chinchilla was one of two former vice presidents to serve under President Óscar Arias during his second term who served as president o Costa Rica from 2006-2010. She resigned from her position as vice president in 2008 to begin campaigning for her own presidency.
Chinchilla won the election with a surprising 46.76% of the vote in the general elections held on February 7, 2010. This victory is a big win for the National Liberation Party (LPN) (green & white). Ottón Solís of the Citizens Action Party (PAC) came in a distant second with 25.16% of the vote.
At 50 years of age Laura Chinchilla will be the first female President of Costa Rica promoting her motto of “Progressive politics for a better world”. On November 28, 2009 took part in a very controversial march called “March for Life and Family”. The supporters of the march are openly opposed to new legislation that would legalize civil unions for same sex couples, and the morning after pill.
Chinchilla is also opposed to a proposed amendment to the constitution intended to create a separation of church and state or (Secularism).
Many opponents of Chinchilla have argued that President Arias will continue to control the presidency from behind the scenes, as demonstrated in a smear campaign by her opponent Ottón Solís. In the commercial Arias has Chinchilla tied to strings and is controlling her like a puppet.
Let see what the next four years bring. Will it be more increase in crime oppression of homosexuals, and declining economy? I hope it will be more like the country I first knew some 5 years ago the Costa Rica I have come to love and appreciate.
